Mood Board

As part of the research for the ‘horror’ film trailer, I created a mood-board. This mood board allowed me to gather some ideas for my trailer and allowed me to see what features other horror films use to attract their target audience. It gave me ideas about font styles, colours, camera angles and images that I could use when creating my magazine. It was important that I didn’t just research horror films and that I focused on my sub-genre, which is ‘psychological horror’. I didn’t know very many psychological films before doing some research. Creating the mood board was important to allow me to more information about psychological horror films.

As you can see, I researched many different horror films and looked at the locations that they are set in, existing films, props, costumes and iconic skills from films. I researched films, such as:
  • Orphan
  • Silent Hill
  • A Tale Of Two Sisters
  • Insidious
  • The Forgotten
  • Black Swan
  • Devoured
  • The other
  • Devils Due
From looking at these existing films, I noticed that most of the main characters are young adults or children and predominantly dark colours are used, such as black and red to represent danger. In addition to this, many of the films are set in a house or forest location. Furthermore, there are many props used throughout the film but they are all related to danger, such as knives. In terms of costume, most of the characters are wearing white and are covered in blood. From creating my mood board, I recognised the importance of sticking to a certain style throughout the film. I believe this research will help me to decide what I need to include in my horror trailer to make it look consistent and professional.
